Brighton & Hove Albion 1-1 Southampton: Seagulls Climb to Second in Premier League Despite VAR Controversy in Draw Against Saints
A thrilling encounter at the Amex Stadium ended in a 1-1 draw, marred by a controversial VAR decision that denied Southampton what could have been the winning goal in the second half. Brighton & Hove Albion took the lead through Kaoru Mitoma, only for Flynn Downes to equalize for Southampton. A prolonged VAR review then added to the drama, leaving both teams frustrated.
Mitoma put Brighton ahead with a flying header from Tariq Lamptey’s cross in the 29th minute, capping off a dominant first-half performance where the Seagulls had the better chances. Georginio Rutter had earlier hit the post, highlighting Brighton’s early pressure.
Southampton, however, found their rhythm after the break and leveled the score when Flynn Downes capitalized on a loose ball just before the hour mark. The visitors believed they had completed their comeback 23 minutes from full-time when Cameron Archer scored, but the goal was disallowed for an offside call after a lengthy VAR review, much to the dismay of Russell Martin’s men.
Despite the setback, Brighton managed to climb to second place in the Premier League table, level on points with Manchester City but having played one more game. For Southampton, the draw offers a glimmer of hope as they remain at the bottom of the table but secure their third point of the season without a defeat.
Next up, Southampton will host Chelsea on Wednesday night, while Brighton will travel to Fulham on Thursday.
